In Italy, 120 women were killed in 2023, with 64 of them by their partners or ex-partners, showing a 6% decrease. The incidence of women killed in a family/relationship context also decreased between 2020 and 2023: in about a quarter of cases, women were killed in the parent/child relationship. In 89% of cases, it was sons who killed their mothers. The report also reveals that the alleged perpetrators of these homicides are identified around 90% of the time. These are some of the findings from the report 'March 8th. International Women's Rights Day. Women victims of violence', by the Criminal Analysis Service of the Central Criminal Police Directorate, Interforce Composition Office of the Department of Public Security. The report covers the years 2020 to 2023 and was done in collaboration with the Lega Pallavolo Serie A Femminile, with young champions contributing their testimonies on the value of sports in promoting gender equality. In 2023, there was also a decrease in abuse against family members and cohabitants, as well as stalking, crimes that had been steadily increasing in the previous three years. On the other hand, sexual violence is on the rise, showing a growing trend over the four-year period. The increase is seen as a partial 'emergence of a hidden issue', indicating a greater awareness of the problem. The report also highlights the 'interesting' data on the use of the 'red code', showing a 'significant increase' in both crimes committed and reports against known perpetrators, such as violations of restraining orders and bans on approaching the victim. This increase could be interpreted positively as a greater willingness to report such crimes.
